Provision Living Senior Communities is proud to celebrate our residents, associates, volunteers and family members during National Assisted Living Week (NALW), September 7-13. This year’s theme is “The Magic of Music, and across our communities we will host a number of music-themed events, to highlight the role music plays in everything from live performances during holidays to therapeutic activities for our memory care residents. Provision Living understands and appreciates the enjoyment music brings to our communities and the role it plays in helping our residents thrive.

“The Magic of Music” events provide an opportunity for Provision Living to say “thank you” to our assisted living residents, many of whom have made significant contributions to our communities across America, as business owners, veterans, civic leaders, firefighters, teachers, parents, and grandparents. Nearly all of our residents have some relationship with music, either in their families or communities, and this year’s NALW theme provides an opportunity to remember how music has enhanced their lives.

imageNational Assisted Living Week also gives us an opportunity to pause and show our appreciation to our staff members for their quality of service, and for their part in carrying out our company’s vision: to create a radiant organization where people are loved, inspired and thriving.

“We are excited to celebrate National Assisted Living Week because it gives us an opportunity to highlight our assisted living care communities as places for people to thrive and be successful in their daily lives. It is important to remember that Assisted Living is not the loss of independent life. It is a decision that could actually increase freedom in everyday life, and often re-connecting with music through concerts and activities provides an early example for new residents to embrace the little things in life they may have come to miss,” said Todd Spittal, President of Provision Living.

“The Magic of Music” celebrates the role music plays in the daily lives of assisted living residents. The theme also celebrates the healing power music can have on individuals living with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Music provides, comfort, joy and a calmness that enhances the lives of residents.

“We explore musical actives for our memory care residents because we believe that music not only taps into the memory, but also helps someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s to get in touch with their feelings. There is so much emotion packed into music and there is musical expression for every emotion,” said Ann James, activity director at Provision Living at St. Louis Hills.

Music also has the ability to bring people together, something Provision Living values beyond measure. The bond created by staff, residents and families at Provision Living through person-centered care and services is evident as we build warm, welcoming, and radiant relationships throughout our communities, where residents are loved, inspired and are thriving.

Over the summer, several of our communities incorporated musical activities into their schedule of events, including several patriotic sing-a-longs over the 4th of July and concerts from local entertainers.

While activities such as these mark special occasions in which music is the focal point, at Provision Living we’ve made music a part of daily life. Communities regularly play soft music during dinner to create a pleasant atmosphere in our dining rooms, and use music to accomplish individualized goals during music therapy in our memory care neighborhoods. Music is powerful and can calm and organize people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and other dementias and evoke feelings of joy in everyone.

“Of all of the activities, music is the most enjoyed in both the assisted living and memory care residents,” said James.

NALW was established in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living to provide a special opportunity to bring together residents, families, employees, volunteers, and the surrounding community to celebrate residents and the services provided by the staff within assisted living communities. Every year, the week long celebration begins on Grandparent’s Day.
