Striving to Thrive: Aerobics for Well-Being

If you want evidence that people of any age can benefit from even a little exercise, look no further than Provision Living in St. Louis Hills. The assisted living community kicked off a new, weekly aerobics class for seniors in July and in just a few weeks there are positive signs of improvement.

“It’s wonderful to see how the residents are able to improve their balance in just a few weeks,” said Ann James, the community’s activities director.

James explained that while some residents participate while sitting, for those who participate by standing, there is a chair placed in front of them to aid in balance. According to James, most of the those who participate by standing are already using the chair to help them balance much less than they did when they began the class in July.

About 15 residents are already regulars, and the feedback has been positive, including an appreciation of the music James and her team plays during the class. The aerobics are low impact, but the music livens up the pace and helps participants take the side to side steps and body turning movements in synch.

Aerobics at the St. Louis Hills assisted living and memory care community is here to stay because it’s good for all levels. Whether a resident is steady on her feet or can’t stand at all, aerobics exercises can still be performed. The lead instructor is JoAnn DeMarco. She helps lead the class on Tuesdays at 9:00 in the auditorium on the lower level and makes sure everyone leaves fully energized.

Seniors often face challenges related to maintaining physical mobility and staying involved in exercise. If these challenges are not overcome, serious health concerns can arise.

Provision Living communities promote exercise programs as part of our commitment to overall well-being, and having a healthy body, in particular.

The St. Louis Hills community exemplifies Provision Living’s commitment to well-being though exercise programs, such as the new Tuesday Aerobics Class.
